Methyl formate is an ester derivative of formic acid, a colorless, transparent, and volatile liquid at room temperature. It has a pleasant aroma. It is soluble in water, alcohols, and ethers, and can also be saponified with water and alkali solutions. It is readily hydrolyzed in moisture. Its vapor forms an explosive mixture with air, with an explosion limit of 6.0%–20.0% (by volume). Methyl formate is an important raw material for organic synthesis, widely used in fragrances, solvents, organic synthesis, bactericides, and insecticides.
